My approach to gardening is to take what I have learnt through experiment, reading and talking to family and friends and apply it the best I can and just see what happens. This has led to really successful surprises, recent examples from my garden are Kale and Gherkins. Getting a broader appreciation of how things work in the garden and solving some mysteries, like, “Am I the only one whose Kale gets infested with whitefly?”, necessitates talking shop with gardeners.
I have searched for and tested many gardening podcasts and blogs and have found many are boring, unorganised or just not aimed at me, however..
For about the last year or so I have been subscribed to and have eagerly awaited each episode on Gardeners Question Time, from BBC Radio 4. Essentially their panel answers questions about all sorts of plants. I am mostly interested in the vegetable questions, but its all interesting and the pace is fast. A special mention goes out to the late Josh Cushnie, one of their presenters who passed away last year. Well worth listening to archive material to hear his opinion (and his mesmerizing accent), even though he passionately hated veges.
The Inadvertent Gardner is a great blog that I have been dropping in to now and then for some time.
I have just subscribed to the US-based You Bet Your Garden podcast. I havent listened yet, but have hight hopes as Mike McGrath hosts a show on [US] National Public Radio, and is a keynote speaker at this years Seed Savers Exchange Convention, an organisation I would never have delved so deeply into if it were not for the wonderful book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
For the local point of view I enjoy the ‘iPlot’ gardening episodes podcast from the This Way Up show on Radio NZ National.
